Hello!!!!!

I am dancing with my fellow local business owners to raise money for the post prom party. Why do kids need a party? Do you remember prom? Did you watch American Pie? Multiply that by 1000 kids and you get the picture.

Spring-Ford graduates over 500 kids a year. They don't need to go to prom to come to the party. Their parents are called when they are leaving the party. It's free for all the juniors and seniors. The budget for the night (food, inflatables, decor, entertainment, prizes) is $40k. Last year this event raised $19k.

The winner of Dancing With The Stars is the team that raises the most money. If you have $5 burning a whole in your pocket, would you consider a donation? Thank you!

SNAP, and some rules

Thank you to all the participants in the SNAP fund raiser! Together, we raised more than we projected!

Some rules. Don't worry, I'm pretty laid back...
1) I do have some weekends available for families who have members who are out of town all week. But not lots of weekends. Because that's when weddings happen!

2) If someone is sick, let's reschedule.

3) The studio is at 17 N 4th Ave, Royersford. That's not really a rule. But it's helpful.

4) You will choose your images at the same appointment as the photo session.

5) I will have hours available for picking up your order.

6) There will be special packages available for SNAP clients. And there's some coupons in the local paper if you look.

7) No scanning. I'm crazy about copyright. No one wants to work for free.

8) Wardrobe. If you can coordinate a room, you can coordinate what your family wears. When you contact me, I'll have pointers. No bold prints, etc. Sleeves and no shorts... flesh is distracting, unless it's your face.

9) Be considerate of your appointment time. We have a lot of people to accommodate!

10) If the kids are little and it's not going to happen, reschedule.

11) Seriously, let's have fun. Come rested and feed the kids. Don't rush.

Family, birthday, gift portraits

A few portraits from several families...
A few years ago, I photographed Racheal's wedding, then their first baby. Now, their whole family for her mother who has everything, plus a growing bunch of grandchildren.
And for the second family... with a grandson being deployed, it was time to get together to wish him well.
It's a privilege to be able to take these and to make everyone's schedule work.
Especially when some of the relatives are coming from different states.
But it's worth it.

A beautiful day at Drexelbrook...
And a very fun group!
Tracey's step-dad provided music during the ceremony and reception. So talented!
Arian's cousins were delightful and had the fun table.
Tracey proved that "wherever the bride is, that's where everyone is"... she had a wonderful crowd with her all night. The Penn State photo was huge.
A flower girl with diva potential, a ham for a ring bearer, and a rendition of Bob Seger's "Old Time Rock and Roll" that I hadn't seen before...
As usual, Drexelbrook provided a lovely evening. Tracey and Arian's guests provided all the action.

I can't imagine this couple having many dull moments!

Tracey and Arian each had their alma matters represented with signature drinks. One for Penn State, another for the Florida Seminoles.

Adelaide and Tim

When you're driving up to the house, it's stunning. The driveway is long and peaceful. The house is welcoming.The whole event was warm and genuine and full of laughter. Adelaide and Tim have a lot of people who helped make this wedding feel blessed.

When I arrived, the guests and the bride and groom were enjoying the lawn games and surrounding countryside. No stress, no rush. Then later, they walked down the aisle together to say their vows. Friends and family members had prepared meaningful things to say about Adelaide and Tim. In Pennsylvania Quaker weddings do not need an officiant and the couple can marry themselves. It's beautiful.

Adelaide is easy to be around. Tim is praised by all who know him. Together, they can do so much to make the lives of others better. Even the children were wonderful. And the 3 dogs, who got along. It really was like a Peaceable Kingdom.

Anni and Brendan in Italy

July 4th, Appiano/Eppan, Italy

Anni and Brendan... where to begin...
Brendan's sister, Maire, was married here in Philadelphia last year and I had the privilege of photographing Maire and Joe's wedding . This year, Anni and Brendan contacted me to see if I'd be ok with coming to Italy to photograph theirs. Of course!

Eppan is Anni's hometown, near Bolzano. It's more Austrian than Italian. The ceremony was in German. The Alps are in everyone's yard. It's fantastic. If you want to go, this is a wonderful place to stay.

The wedding weekend started, for me, with Sundowners. This was held at the local winery Von Braunbach. Since wedding invitations went out to 11 countries, here's where the out of town guests were able to see the couple before the wedding day. I got to see some of the family that I had met at Maire's wedding. And I got to talk to Maire as a guest instead of as a bride, which was wonderful.

A note about Italian/German Catholic weddings... they let you play music that you can't play here. Like Eric Clapton, Irish songs, Anni's Song, and so forth. Delightful! There was a talented set of musicians and they filled the church with sound.

After the ceremony, the Umtrunk. Champagne and great food in the church courtyard while Anni and Brendan's friends had them perform for the guests. Anni's riding club friends made Brendan be a horse (she loves horses) and pull her from station to station to perform tasks based on where they had lived. For Ireland, it was to find the real Guinness. Innsbruck, do a waltz, NY... make sushi, Sud Tirol... guess the regional food. Then for getting everything right, he gets her to the finish line and the friends present them with a painting of her horses.

Then we went up the mountain in a fantastic car. Up a one lane, two-way, mountain road with switchbacks. Glorious.

The reception was at the family home. I had been there the day before to see how things were set up and for lunch. There had been a lot of preparation for this! It came together so well. For all the moving parts that this wedding had, Anni's family was calm, cool, and collected. Lots of details and food and things to put together, and it was divine.

Anni had told me that her friends would have skits and games and other such ways of having fun at the wedding. No garter or bouquet. Just lots of great things that their friends came up with:
1) The paint by number.

2) Her friends had created calendars of the couple and sold them to the guests and gave the proceeds to the bride and groom.
3) The cousins made them play charades and pictionary using such phrases as "chastity belt" and "binge drinking"
4) Another set of friends gave everyone a postcard to be mailed to the couple as designated times.
5) Yet another set presented her with a traditional chimney sweep blessing with a gorgeous gift of flowers.

After dinner, a lighted path to the pool for desserts and a slide show by more of Anni's friends. (they have a lot of friends!)

At 2am, the caterer brought out a copper pot with potatoes and a table of cheese and proscuitto, and other things that go on potatoes.

And by the way, Anni and Brendan are a wonderful couple. It's obvious that they adore each other, have a lot of love for and from their families, and when they're together it's the way it should be. No matter how many amazing things there were at their wedding, if they didn't look at each other the way that they do, it would just have been a beautiful party. The whole event was as magical as it was because they're head over heals for each other.

Greener Photography

Greener Photography! I'm a happy new member. Anyone who knows me, knows that I'll pick a can out of the trash to recycle it. Our family has always been that way, cloth diapers, composting, and so forth.

I will admit that my one guilty pleasure is that I still print paper proofs for my event clients. But I think I implement enough other things to offset it. And holding real photos is a treat! They really shouldn't live their lives out on a hard drive. I'm rationalizing. But I'm not apologizing. Otherwise, we're very green here. Geothermal hvac, canvas bags at the grocery, trying to be a localvore.

St Dorothy's and The Old Mill
December 13th

I could say lots about this wedding. It was fun, genuine, and full of great times...

Perfect sunny day. Cheeriest kitchen, sweetest flower girl, and lots of color.
Leslie is my favorite kind of bride. Happy, ready without stress, smiling and smiling and knowing that there's nothing to worry about. I can't be around her without being happy. Apparently, no one else can either!

Beautiful church, a priest I can relate to, big crowd. This is where Leslie grew up and even the people who came to worship after the wedding were asking me how it went. Lots of blessings.

I love red in December. And winter light. And a good bagpipe player is always a treat. This was a lot of fun. Leslie knows herself and that a veil was not her thing, I love what she did with her hair. David is easy going and both families were so commingled, I kept forgetting whose brother was whose.

Funny thing when a reception venue has a stage... some guests might use it. And they used it well. And with tented areas off of the main room, there was lots of celebratory cigars, but without being cold or around anyone else. (I love the smell of cigars outside. Picnics, family, weddings...)

And Blackthorn. Makes me happy.

I also got to see a couple whose wedding I photographed a few years ago. (and you do not look like you had a baby!)

I swear this was spontaneous. I did NOT tell them to strike a pose. Seriously. They were that fun. Jen was in the receiving line. I was just roaming about.

Lipstick on the dress. Enter stellar bridesmaids with talc. Now I know why wedding planners carry chalk.
The flowers were intoxicating.

December 5th Skippack and William Penn in Gwynedd.

It.Was.So.Cold. But worth it!

Jen should not play poker unless it's online. She has no poker face. You always know what she's feeling. She's delightfully expressive and makes for a lot of fun with a camera.

The Flowers were unexpected. The combination of texture and colors... I wanted to keep looking at them. Jen denied having anything to do with them. The reception location did them. She couldn't be bothered with worrying about floral design. They did a great job. It looked like she had described a complicated list of what she wanted.

Bridesmaids wore blue and I can honestly say that I loved their dresses. The bridesmaids were a laugh a minute. And very handy with stains on the white dress. They were wonderful.

Both families are warm and welcoming. No drama, no fuss. This day went so smoothly. Jen and Jason are so easy to be around. The party kept going until midnight and could easily have continued [and probably did].

November 22nd at the Sofitel.

I've adored Jackie's family for years now. They're some of the nicest people to spend 12 hours with! I'm so happy that Jackie married a family that's as fantastic as she is. And thank heavens that her mom is one of the best make-up artists around. When you shed tears of joy as easy as Jackie, you need to know that your make-up will last. And it did!

I asked Jackie's mom how one begins to explain a room design like theirs to a florist. She simply stated "Jordan's family has impeccable taste".

When guests are dancing, really dancing, even before the bridal party are announced, you know it's going to be quite a night. The music was over the top. But I knew it would be.

Everything was beautiful. Jackie is a fantastic bride. Jordan had lots of fun. My job was easy. They were surrounded, literally, by 200+ people who love them. I didn't even care what time it was. And then it was midnight.

During the toasts, the fire alarm went off. Dreamtime's leader handled it perfectly. She made sure that there was no need to go anywhere but held the music until we knew. Professional the whole time.

I work for Embassy Row Productions (the producers of Who Wants to Be A Millionaire and Power of 10). We are currently casting the newest version of The Newlywed Game for Game Show Network & we will be holding a casting call in Philadelphia. The day After the Phillies parade. Thank heavens!

Getting married at the Philopatrian is like having a wedding at your wealthy relative's house. It's cozy and elegant and you start to feel like your family belongs there.

Noreen and Walter are good to everyone. The day wasn't theirs, it was everybody's. They appreciate each other, their family, their friends. And good wine, food, places, and details. Their friends made me feel like I was welcome. All the kids were above average and funny. Clancy is the dog that makes other people think they should get a dog. He's so sweet, frisky but mindful, and loves Noreen. We went to the park. He was delightful.

Wonderful day. So many people were so happy about this wedding. The world is a better place when couples like this one meet.

Isis! and Posh Events

Isis, the wonderful and fantastic wedding and event planner who owns Posh Events, came to the studio. We talked shop. And had chocolate. And my daughters and I had switched out the Halloween decorations to start Thanksgiving. My husband helped me with the gas furnace.

Isis is so easy to talk to. I didn't want her to leave. She's so calming.

If you don't know if you want a planner... let me tell you, I love them. Isis and I have worked together in the past, and she is fantastic. She's on her game. She's a joy to have at a wedding. I just adore her!

I love fall. A lot. For wedding's it's my favorite. All my favorite colors.
Great light. Brothers who carve pumpkins with their fiances for the bride and groom, candy favors, brothers who also play the guitar for your first dance, cute nephew with kissable cheeks, leaves at the church that are as big as your head (I brought one home for my kids), and church ladies that really are nice.

Fun grandmothers, emotional fathers, moms who dance, preachers you grew up with. It's all so good. It's my favorite wedding theme!

Fantastic day in September. Kelly is beautiful, welcoming, and never had a moment where she wasn't enjoying the day. Her family, his family, all their friends... it was a joy to be around them all! The priest was imported from Kelly's childhood, beautiful church where she grew up, and just enough rain to walk under an umbrella.

The band. What can I say about a band that plays Beck at a wedding? Over the top fantastic.

This wedding was a lot of fun. Kids were dancing, a nephew was passed around, lots of great color, the tree house at the park in Scranton, and some ink that I wish I could have a day photographing.

To those of you who have written me, asking why I've not blogged... sorry!~ I didn't realize I was so entertaining! I'll start up again. Facebook has taken my attention. I promise to start adding images from sessions here again!

In the meantime. I'm very excited. All portrait items will now be delivered in, or with (if the image is too big) a reusable bag from ECOBAGS^®. This makes me so happy. If you've ever seen me in the grocery store shopping for our family of 6, you'd know that I always have 20 canvas bags with me. I've also gotten bags for fruits and veggies and bagels, no more plastic. As for the cat food bags that are plastic, I've sewn them into totes as well.

Anyway. We've been all into the environment for years. In the 15 years that we've been married, we've never had trash pickup. We recycle whatever comes into the house with the exception of Q-tips and some other stuff. Cloth diapers, compost, thrift store donations. Here's where we take our stuff. Except for #7 plastics, they can't be recycled. So if it's a #7, I don't buy it. But sometimes I accidentally buy ketchup in a #7 and then I sit there and curse because I hate throwing it out. So I store it in the garage until the recycle center says they have a buyer for #7... I hate trash.

July 26th... what a day!
Kristine was a bridesmaid a few years back at a wedding that I photographed. She was memorable and so fun. I got to see the bride and groom again from that wedding, too. It was great. Although I had already seen them when their baby was born. (so cute!)

Kristine had peonies. I love peonies. And then color in all the other flowers that was just beautiful.
She's contagious to be around. You have to be happy if you're around Kristine. Her mother-in-law told me more than once that she likes her.

Jason's family. The party was extended until midnight. This is a fun bunch. No Macarena did their magic as always without being cheesy ever. Fantastic play list. As always.

Beautiful day. Patrice has a very fun brother who I felt like I knew by the end of the reception. Meredith Manor is so pretty, there's no need to go anywhere else for photos. Patrice's great uncle (?) is a funny priest.
Mike and Patrice have some wonderful friends and family. They were all fun to be around all night and gave the couple a great evening. There were an unusual amount of pregnant people at this wedding. Including Deanne, a bride from a few years ago... looking good!

Thank you for letting me be part of this day! It was beautiful. Brides who are teachers plan differently than most of us. You just know that Patrice's students love having her as a teacher.

Royersford's Capone is coming home.

	Jen Capone Photography recently opened on Fourth Avenue in Royersford.

Jen Capone is returning home to her Royersford roots after travelling throughout the East Coast.

"I was tired of traveling. I wanted to be local, to get back to my community," Capone said.
Capone purchased Dr. Dabbback's old office, located at 17 N. Fourth Ave. in February and turned it into a photography studio.
"When I looked at Dr. Dabback's building, I remembered being there with an ear infection when I was little. It's not just a property to me. It's a part of me."
Capone is in the process of slowly renovating the inside of the building as she works.
"Dr. Dabback's office is the perfect location for me. I knew this building when I bought it. It's beautiful," Capone said. "I would love for Dr. Dabback to come over to see it."
During the renovation, Capone has found a few surprises along the way.
"We found rent records stored that will be donated to the historical society," Capone said.
The majority of Capone's work is done outside of the studio. Through her Web site requests and previous clients, she travels to Manhattan, Boston, Key West, New Jersey and Philadelphia, mostly for weddings.
"I would like to be more involved in the local community," Capone said.
Capone recently won third place in the quarterly contest for the Wedding Photojournalist Association.
"It was in the Getting Ready Category for a wedding. It's an honor to be recognized for your work," Capone said.
Capone, who grew up in Royersford, earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. She has been practicing photography for the last 20 years.

This was such a good day. I looked forward to seeing this family again and all their charm and laughter. And really fun aunts.

I love their story! It's better than a novel and all true. I loved meeting the clergy, realizing that the priest's wife keeps it all together, enjoyed all the details of a jewel of a church, found the guests to be loving and sincere and a lot of fun. There were so many details that actually meant something. Not ideas from a magazine, but things that were personal, traditional, and genuine. Delightful.

Fantastic. I'm beyond words. Getting to be a part of this day was an honor.

She showed him the secret room, got him dirty, showed him the attic, washed him off in one of the old sinks from when the studio was a doctor's office. These are wonderful boys.

JON LOWENSTEIN COMMENTS ON JUDGING THE Q1 2008 CONTEST

“The photographs that I gravitated towards in each category displayed a unique style and voice, composition, light, style, etc, but also made me feel something for the people in the moment that the photographer captured. So many of the pictures were similar yet a few in each category rose to the top as quite distinct and unique and I enjoyed that aspect of the process of judging this category. I felt a bit disappointed when I looked through the pictures and saw the same thing over and over, yet at some level that's what photography is, especially when we are paid to make a couple look good on one of the most important days of their lives. Therefore there are some inherent parameters that we must work under. So having that in mind I tried to pick photographs that illuminated the moments that elicited some emotional response in me. The wedding day is an emotional day and I looked for photographs that also showed me special moments within that space. Again, I have to emphasize that I looked for photographs that made me think a bit more about the photographed moment.

So a good example is the first photograph in the Getting Ready category. It was a photograph of a woman crossing the street carrying a dress carefully, almost daintily in her arms. To me it looks like a combination of classic street photography from the 1970's. It looks like a Joel Meyerowitz photograph when he left his job and hit the streets. So many photographs of the wedding dresses are hanging on the wall, the closet or somewhere in the window and the photographer makes a picture that looks like many others, but this photograph transcends the scene and really stuck with me. It seems that the dress is being treated with such respect that it makes me think about the woman who's going to go and wear it. And it's not a complex photograph, but the moment is just right. The woman has a hop in her step and she seems genuinely happy about being the dress's caretaker. Excellent shot. The photograph shows a strong way of seeing that put me in that moment.

I also have to say that there were many photographs that relied too heavily on wide angle lenses, strange angles and funky looks that to be honest, I think often distract from the moment and the impact that the photographs can have. There were many pictures that also put the people directly in the middle of the frame and looked like the photographer let the auto focus sensor choose where to focus instead of the photographer. In simpler terms, many photographs had the main subject directly in the middle of the frame and often combined with a too wide focal length, diminishing the impact of the subject. So vary your compositions, but please don't rely on these wide-angle zoom lenses that really bring down the quality of the photographs.

I did think the overall quality was quite strong and I was quite impressed with the work. Lots of fun to look through the work. Thanks for letting me look at the work and comment on it.”

Saul is terribly impressive. Listening to the first 7 parts of Numbers in Hebrew is very long. However, I didn't tire of it. I'm just surprised that he didn't need a drink of water to get through it. I'm sure that baseball and all it's statistics helped him learn all those names.

I could spend a lot of time with this family. They're real, they don't pretend, and when kids act like kids, everything is good. Their grandparents weren't present, and yet in so many ways they were. Besides the cuff links, the yad, and the Torah, there was a lot of talk about what their grandparents contributed to their lives. Having recently lost a grandparent and joyfully receiving something that belonged to him, these things resonated with me.

I know that Saul will go on to do a lot of things. With a genuine smile, a deeply caring family, and the ability to dig deep and learn, he'll be a busy man.
